Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Chief Enrollment Officer, the Executive Director of Retention and Completion will work collaboratively with key stakeholders to lead university retention and completion efforts that ensure forward degree progress and timely degree completion for all student populations. Through strategic partnership with cross-campus departments, the incumbent will coordinate and ensure implementation of intentional student success and retention initiatives that target a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population, which includes first generation, low-wealth, historically underrepresented, transfer, military-veteran, and international students. This role will include a focus on research and analysis to understand retention and attrition trends (both at APU and nationally), development of future initiatives that have the potential to positively impact retention and completion rates, and assessment of current retention efforts.
Master's degree required, doctorate preferred
A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in higher education administration
Demonstrated success in collaborating within all levels of the institution, ability to work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
Demonstrated leadership, management, problem solving, and decision-making ability
Ability to integrate Christian values in all aspects of leadership
Ability to engage in critical thinking and exercise independent judgment
Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information
Ability to work independently, present self professionally and reflect the goals and standards of APU
Experience in enrollment/retention management
Understanding and knowledge of current evidence-based best practices related to student retention and student success (experience preferred)
Experienced at data analysis, analyzing national trends, and writing reports
Self-motivated and proven ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a member of a team.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and meet established goals and required deadlines
Experience in leading successful cross-functional teams
Experience working with students from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds preferred
Strong technical skills that include experience working with early alert systems/tools preferred
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications i.e. Word, Excel, Google Tools, etc.
Primary Duties/Essential Functions
Responsible for the development, implementation, and management of a comprehensive student retention plan that positively impacts student enrollment
Conducts research and data analysis to assist in the enrollment projection process
Utilizes data to develop and implement new university strategies to improve key metrics such as student retention goals and graduation rates
Develops strong and effective relationships with academic departments and university administrators in order to influence ongoing department level strategies to positively impact student engagement and persistence
Serves on the University Student Success and Retention Council
Effectively manages operational budgets and provides consistent and accurate implementation of federal, state, and university policies.
Represents the University on designated committees and at conferences and/or events.
Other duties as assigned
Assesses existing early alert practices and leads improvement efforts to create a comprehensive early alert system focused on identifying and reaching at-risk undergraduate and graduate students to positively impact enrollment
Provides ongoing assessment of student communication throughout the university to determine effectiveness and recommend and implement necessary changes to ensure relevant and timely contact with students and parents
Assesses existing retention programs and disseminates findings and recommendations
