Essential Job Duties:
This position is a Family & Consumer Educator who will serve as the Local Food Coordinator for Wake County with the following responsibilities: 50% – develop nutrition education programs; initiate marketing strategies and identify small business development resources to support the health & wellness of Wake County residents and the sustainable growth of food system operations; 25%- represent Cooperative Extension in local food system development efforts including strategic community initiatives; collective action efforts and partnership development; 25% – work directly to facilitate internal planning and leveraging of expertise from Food Security Manager, Agriculture Agent, Horticulture Agent, EFNEP Program Assistants, 4-H personnel and volunteers in their efforts to support urban agriculture and food system development.
Develop external advisory capacity supporting food system development.
Assess needs and opportunities for impact at the individual, organizational and community levels.
Develop strategic priorities and associated strategies related to nutrition education, food system development and local market expansion.
Facilitate joint urban agriculture planning among internal staff and volunteers.
Implement educational activities designed to address priorities.
Evaluate results and impact of educational programs.
Strengthen and support the development of shared measurement systems related to food access, food security and related agribusiness.
Work as a team member representing Cooperative Extension on the local food policy council.
Support the implementation and ongoing assessment of food security efforts in the County. Support the food system related activities of the Wake Agribusiness Council and Human Services Public Health System.
Develop and maintain effective media presence, strategies and relationships.
Participate on the Wake County Extension Marketing Team.
Develop accurate reports in a timely manner.
Develop additional resources to support strategic initiatives associated with food system development in the County and at the State level, as appropriate.
One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

A Master's degree at time of hiring is desirable, with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences, nutrition or related science.
The expectation is that a Master's degree will be pursued after hiring.
Required license or certification:
Valid Driver's License and reliable, personal transportation required.
Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
