The Department of Political Science is dedicated to promoting political understanding and public engagement through innovative teaching, research, and community service in all areas of politics and political science. The department currently consists of nearly 40 faculty, with about equal numbers of tenure-line and lecturers. With approximately 700 Political Science majors, the department is deeply committed to high quality undergraduate and graduate education, offering multiple degree programs and internship opportunities in the state capital. Undergraduate students can major in Political Science, International Relations, and Political Science/Journalism. Graduate students can pursue a Master's degree in Political Science. The department also hosts a highly successful internship program, which includes both a regular year-round internship option and the prestigious Sacramento Semester Program. The programs are managed on the main campus and downtown. Other opportunities include a lively peer-to-peer student mentoring program. The department is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of ten academic departments, four interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes as well as the Project for an Informed Electorate and developing Center for Race, Immigration, and Social Justice.
Duties related to internship coordination, as assigned: - Directing “The Sacramento Semester Program”, a well-regarded internship experience placing students from across the California State University System in the state Capitol each spring. - Coordinating and continuing to develop our internship programs throughout the calendar year. - Building internship opportunities for our three majors and maintaining relationships with staff in the state Capitol and other offices, agencies, and organizations where we place interns
Other duties: - Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses - Advising and mentoring students - Engaging in scholarly and professional activities - Providing service to the department, college, and campus - Providing service to the community
- Ph.D. in Political Science, or related field ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by January 2021 - Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student body and a diverse community - Strong commitment to college teaching - Strong commitment to experiential learning - Ability to manage internship programs - Vision for expanding our internship programs - Ability to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses - Ability to teach introduction to American government (POLS 1) and other Political Science courses (the department is open to subfields of expertise) - Potential for scholarly achievement; open to methodological approach
- Experience supporting students with diverse backgrounds, including under-represented groups and first-generation college students - Demonstrated leadership in a variety of settings - Demonstrated organizational or administrative experience - Ability to actively engage with government officials, community leaders, and other key stakeholders - Experience in working with a diverse community groups - Experience involving students in experiential learning programs such as service learning and internships - Knowledge of California politics and government - Experience with grant writing
This position will be an academic year, tenure-track appointment with release time each semester and compensation during summer to facilitate the assigned role of Internship Coordinator.
