To provide administrative assistance/support to the department chairperson and departmental faculty, students, and university clientele. The department serves 500+ Biology students (undergraduate and graduate), with 26 faculty members (fulltime & part-time), and manages over $2 million in external funding annually. This position is responsible for work generated by the Department Chair and the departmental faculty, and will be integral to helping implement the academic and research goals and objectives of the Department, its programs, and the College.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The primary function of the Department of Biology is to train professional biologists in the nature of scientific investigations, the principles of biology and the value of scientific enterprise. The goals and objectives are to prepare students for careers and research opportunities in industry, government, and graduate programs in the biological sciences; to prepare students for admission to professional schools; to prepare students to teach biology at the secondary school level; to provide courses in biology that fulfill the general education core requirements of the University; to provide cognate courses for students majoring in or receiving certification in other fields; to act as a resource to the University and community through cooperative programs, workshops, seminars, course offerings, and public service; to conduct research and scholarly activity in the areas of biology, biotechnology, computational biology and biology education; and to provide students with resultant practical experience in the application of biological research. The Department of Biology has several enrichment programs and activities that are available to students which are designed to increase knowledge and competitiveness of biology majors. They include: Department seminars, Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters, student honor societies/clubs, Supplemental Instruction, Pre-Matriculation, Service Learning, Life Mapping and Advising Center, Peer tutoring Outreach Programs, etc.

High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
The Supervisor prefers a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or related business areas with a minimum of two years of progressively responsible administrative and/or office management experience. Will consider individuals with an Associate degree plus three years of progressively responsible administrative/management/clerical experience; graduation from high school and four years of administrative/management/clerical experience; or at least five years of experience commensurate to this position. Applicant must have knowledge of office management and operation procedures, ability to operate various office equipment, and knowledge and ability to communicate correctly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Applicant must possess a sincere willingness to work as a team member, and also should have the ability to work cooperatively with personnel internal and external to the Department.
