Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Athletic Director – Compliance for The Rutgers Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. This position reports to the Associate Athletic Director and assists the Associate Athletic Director with oversight of two staff members. This position manages all athletic compliance matters as they relate to one or more high profile programs, including oversight of adherance to Bylaw(s) 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 20. Such oversight includes providing timely rules education to all individuals involved within the program(s), monitoring the program activities, providing game day support at home and away contests, and ensuring their adherance with all NCAA, Big Ten Conference and institutional requirements. In addition, this position creates and leads a national consortium for athletic compliance in the program’s sport.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Manages the Office of Athletic Compliance’s oversight of the Academic Support Services for Student-Athletes (ASSSA) staff to ensure compliance with all NCAA and Big Ten Conference legislation. Academic misconduct is a large risk area and the number of NCAA infractions is increasing across the membership.
Educates all ASSSA staff, including tutors, learning specialists and mentors, regarding academic misconduct and permissible interaction with student-athletes. This requires the incumbent to study national educational trends, recruiting data and engage in peer bench marking to make certain that our monitoring and educational efforts are exemplary.
Manages the institution’s compliance manual which encompasses all policies and procedures that are the foundation for establishing consistency and institutional control. The policy and procedure review is an ongoing responsibility as the NCAA proposes over 100 legislative changes each year, which requires constant review and adjustments by the DIA.
Responsible for implementing these changes for our institution, educating all involved individuals, and ensuring that the proper monitoring mechanisms are established.
Serve as the internal, primary liaison to the audit staff while they perform their annual audit (The Office of Athletic Compliance has implemented a continuous internal audit procedure in cooperation with the institution’s Audit and Advisory Services staff. This audit process will use the nationally accepted procedures created by the Association of College & University Auditors to perform an annual audit. Each annual audit lasts 8-10 months.)
Provides all necessary documentation and information to the audit staff through regular interaction and analysis of current systems/policies within the department. The overall outcome of the audit will be to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.
Supervises all aspects associated with Bylaw(s) 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 20 for an additional subset of sports and liaison groups as well as completing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of five years minimum relevant experience (preferably experience at a Division I campus, Division I Conference Office, or the NCAA).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong attention to detail required.
Sound working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and LSDBi necessary.
Ability to articulate and interpret complex issues for internal and external constituents
Must be able to create and execute policies and procedures for enhanced institutional control consistent with NCAA and conference governance reform.
Excellent working knowledge of NCAA Division I rules
Master's or Law degree. Working knowledge of JumpForward and the NCAA Requests/Self-Report Online system.
Prior Division I campus, Division I Conference Office, or the NCAA experience strongly preferred.
Computer to include all Microsoft software, access to the NCAA Applications, JumpForward and other presentation software.
In addition, the position requires the use of a cellular telephone to respond to inquiries and other timely matters outside of the traditional working hours.
