The Director of Communications is responsible for leading the development of strategic internal and external communications programs of Northern Virginia Community College. Efforts include support of the institutions brand messaging, development of a strategic communications plan; coordinating media relations, ability to act as institution spokesperson when senior leadership is unavailable, vendor and budget management.
Description of Duties and Tasks:
Leads the colleges overall communications efforts with faculty, staff and students, this role is accountable for leading the strategic development of a communications plan and elevating the organization's overall communications effort with targeted audiences.
Responsible for supporting the consistent internal and external brand messaging strategy that is reflected across all programs, services and locations areas.
Develops annual communication calendar that supports key college messages and talking points across all communications programs (PR, internal, student, etc.).
Serves as chief media strategist and college spokesperson; responsible for identifying and building relationships with new and existing editors, reporters, producers, bloggers and tech analysts to increase media coverage.
Drive editorial story planning, writing and pitching to media.
Lead, develop, motivate, manage a high performing communications team, including contractors, to meet strategic goals and business objectives while staying within budget.
Implement annual media training opportunities for college leadership and faculty/staff to increase their communication skills and capabilities.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Communications, marketing, business or a related field, or equivalent education and work experience.
Significant professional experience and leadership in a communications position in the post-secondary, government or business sectors.
Expert level communications experience in higher education, a state agency or technology industry.
