Centre College seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), to begin July 1, 2020. Since 2006, the CTL has served as the nexus for people, projects, and initiatives that advance the art and science of effective teaching, in support of Centre’s mission of preparing students for lives of learning, leadership, and service. It encourages conversations about pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning, promotes faculty teaching and professional development, and supports experiential learning initiatives and faculty and staff innovation with instructional technologies. Duties and Responsibilities
Provide vision and direction in strengthening an existing culture of evidence-based, inclusive teaching;
Offer campus leadership on teaching initiatives, including those around evidence-based pedagogies, diverse and inclusive classrooms, effective use of instructional technologies, and high-impact practices such as experiential learning;
Develop and implement campus programming to benefit teaching and learning across campus;
Work directly with faculty to provide formative consultations, funding support, resources, and mentorship around teaching;
Effectively manage, support, and collaborate with an office staff that includes specialists in instructional technology and experiential learning;
Teach in an appropriate academic discipline, usually two courses/academic year;
Contribute to, and promote faculty engagement in, scholarly conversations on teaching beyond Centre’s campus, including teaching and learning conferences, workshops, or publications, and identify external collaborations and funding opportunities.
Salary and Appointment Information
The Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. This is a 12-month, full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Ph.D. or terminal degree in an academic discipline;
At least three years of experience teaching in a college or university setting, conducting research in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and/or working in a similar Center for Teaching and Learning;
Experience in faculty professional development, including developing and delivering programming and providing mentoring and/or peer review of teaching;
Evidence of excellence in higher education teaching;
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
In addition, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
Proven expertise in fostering a diverse and inclusive campus community, mentoring faculty from traditionally underrepresented groups, and/or guiding campus efforts to increase equity and inclusion in the classroom;
Understanding of a small liberal arts college environment;
A record of contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning, national or regional educational development initiatives, and/or relevant disciplinary research;
Success in seeking, receiving, and managing external grant funds for faculty development.
