Full-time appointment in Painting. The Painting Department of Maryland Institute College of Art invites applications for this full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning August 1, 2020.

The College seeks an accomplished and innovative artist committed to painting and inclusive pedagogy that engages the next generation of artists. The successful candidate will have a strong background across painting modalities and have the ability to integrate theoretical, material, practical, and social issues into studio teaching. While the Department represents varied approaches to painting, we seek an artist with a strong background in representational techniques applied to the contemporary context.
We seek a candidate whose practice, research, and/or lived experience will expand the diverse range of perspectives and areas of expertise reflected in the department to further help students understand their work within contemporary theory and praxis, particularly with regard to intersectional issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality.
This faculty member will teach eighteen credits per year (three courses per semester) at an art and design school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum, and the importance of the fine arts and will be capable of teaching all levels of the undergraduate program. While the primary appointment is in the Painting Department, the teaching load will likely include courses in MICAâs First Year Experience program and Life Drawing in the Drawing Department. MICA is a student-centered institution, and faculty must be able to successfully teach, mentor, and empower a diverse population of talented and deeply-engaged students.
In addition to teaching, all full-time faculty are expected to pursue professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the Department and College. Faculty are also required to meaningfully contribute in a variety of areas that include: all aspects of departmental operations, institutional governance, advising, committee service, and scheduled department and student activities.
BA in related field
Strong record of professional excellence as demonstrated by a portfolio of work and a record of exhibition or other means of public engagement relevant to the artistâs practice
Knowledgeable about contemporary art issues and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological contexts
Personal commitment to teaching on a college level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, class, and their intersections
Expertise in utilizing traditional painting media to create relevant contemporary works
Capable of incorporating digital processes within the studio classroom
Capable of teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate courses
An expressed interest in the greater Baltimore community through teaching or practice
Demonstrates ability to enrich the aims for diversity, equity and justice of the Painting department and the College
Highly valued but not required:
MFA or equivalent experience
Three years of college level teaching beyond graduate assistantships or commensurate experience
