The Dean serves as the senior administrator and is the principal champion for vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the College of Health and Human Sciences. The Dean must work effectively with departments, faculty, staff, other senior administrators and student leaders to define, articulate, and successfully implement a distinctive mission, vision, and educational philosophy for the college. The Dean is responsible for leadership of the college’s strategic planning, student success efforts, accreditation, enrollment, academic program planning, assessment of curriculum and instruction, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, professional development and research support, budgeting and fiscal management, and the allocation and use of facilities. The Dean is uniquely placed to create an environment within the college to support the campus’ investment in recruiting and retaining diverse faculty and staff as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
The Dean represents the College and University in community, corporate, and professional organizations and agencies. This person is required to develop resources from internal and external connections that further the goals of the College and University in an environment where external philanthropy has become of greater importance to the sustainability of programs. The Dean must exhibit solid management skills, effectiveness in resource acquisition and allocation, ability to build partnerships within the University and throughout the community, and a clear understanding of state and national trends in higher education and in the disciplines.
As a member of the Provost’s Academic Affairs Leadership Team and the President’s Leadership Council, the Dean works with the president, provost, Deans, and other senior administrators to manage the university's resources to accomplish the college’s and university’s goals.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Provide visionary leadership to faculty, staff, and administrators to foster academic excellence of students and faculty. Oversee strategic planning for the college and provide leadership to faculty and staff, encouraging a sense of academic community and the vision, commitment, and integrity necessary to define and accomplish College and University goals.
Proactively support the growth and success of all students in the college. Effectively lead the college to provide the support necessary for all students to achieve academic excellence and to supply the most qualified graduates to industry, government, and academia.
Create the conditions necessary for research to thrive, moving disciplines forward, providing experiences for students, building the reputation of the college, and bringing in resources from outside agencies. Champion opportunities for research that position our faculty and students as leaders within Silicon Valley and beyond.
Forge productive external partnerships with outreach community, business, and government leaders, increasing advancement efforts with Silicon Valley and beyond (e.g., grants, foundation support, industry partners, and private donors).
Manage resources strategically, fairly and effectively, and take initiative to seek out and generate external resources to advance college and university goals. Lead a management team, which includes associate deans, department chairs, and development officer(s) within the college.
Responsible for the college's effective recruitment and evaluation of the faculty, staff, and administrators as well as the professional development of all employees. Provide direction and support to departments to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to College and University goals and strategies.
This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.
