We seek a teacher and scholar who specializes broadly in crime, law, and social justice and whose research and teaching would complement the JS Department's five disciplinary pillars: Criminology, Criminal Justice Studies, Forensic Science, Legal Studies, and Human Rights. A demonstrated commitment to academic leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, program development, diversity, and student success is highly desired. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong background in program development, as well as the necessary skills and experience to serve as department Chair. The Chair of Justice Studies is the Department’s chief academic and administrative officer, who reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) and works closely with college and campus Chairs and Directors. The Justice Studies department is one of the largest programs in CHHS—one of the seven colleges on the SJSU campus, with approximately 1,100 majors. The JS Chair is primarily responsible for leading a multidisciplinary department that awards a BS in Justice Studies, also with a Concentration in Criminology, a BS in Forensic Science, also with concentrations in Biology and Chemistry, as well as Minors in Human Rights, Legal Studies, and Forensic Science. At the graduate level, the Department offers a Master’s degree in Justice Studies and an online Master’s degree in Criminology-Concentration in Global Criminology. Drawing from a dynamic group of dedicated full-time faculty and an extensive network of highly qualified part-time faculty, the department benefits from a rich history in the Bay Area and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student success. Qualifications: Required: 1. Doctoral degree in Criminology, Justice Studies, Law & Society, Legal Studies, or a related field. 2. Demonstrated record of scholarship, teaching, and professional achievement, including leadership positions in professional associations, sufficient to merit a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor. 3. Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education. 4. Demonstrated ability to manage academic budgets and secure resources to maintain a healthy department. 5. Proven track record in acquisition and administration of external grants and donations. 6. Demonstrated ability to lead strategic planning and innovatively implement projects and programs, including experience in program accreditation and assessment. 8. Excellent communication skills and experience mentoring and developing junior faculty. 9. Demonstrated ability to respect shared faculty governance and to foster a collegial organizational climate within a multicultural and dynamic academic unit, working with highly diverse faculty, students, and staff. 10. Demonstrated awareness of, and sensitivity to, the educational goals of a diverse student population as might have been gained through academic leadership, teaching, cross-cultural study, training, and other comparable experience. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will demonstrate the appropriate academic background, administrative skills, and leadership experience to serve as departmental Chair. The Chair operates in a highly collaborative faculty governance environment, and has the following duties and responsibilities: 1. Maintain high standards of performance for faculty, staff and students. 2. Manage JS department budgets, enrollment, scheduling and facilities. 3. Identify, recruit, evaluate and provide supervision for JS faculty and staff. 4. Advance the Department’s curriculum, and maintain all program review practices for the Department. 5. Lead the Department’s community outreach, student scholarship awards program, fundraising, and promotional efforts. 6. Develop, promote and enforce Department policies as needed. 7. Lead strategic planning, enrollment management, and comprehensive assessment reporting and accreditation efforts. 8. Serve as chief public spokesperson and representative of the JS Department. 9. Consistently address the needs of a student population of great diversity in age, cultural background, primary language, ability, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and academic preparation through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, advisement, and respectful engagement.
