The Department of Physics at the University of Mary Washington is seeking candidates for a new position at the rank of Full Professor to join our faculty as the Margaret Duke '44 Chair in Applied Physics and Director of the Physics Program to begin in August, 2020. Candidates should have an established reputation at national and international levels as demonstrated by technical publications in refereed journals as well as publications in major conference proceedings. Excellence in undergraduate teaching and research as well as demonstrated administrative capability is also required. Highly qualified candidates will be considered for tenure at the time of hire. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an original research program in his/her area of expertise. The field of research specialty is open but should be in the broad area of applied physics, and preference will be given to candidates who will involve students in on-campus research. Candidates should have enthusiasm for working with students, the ability to teach a variety of courses across the physics curriculum, and a desire to contribute creatively to our traditional major, our newly designed major in Applied Physics, and general education courses, such as First-Year Seminar. Successful candidates must demonstrate teaching experience and excellence in teaching in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds. Continued professional development and meaningful contribution to departmental and college-wide service is also required. The department recently moved into new lab and teaching facilities in the Jepson Science Center addition and is well-equipped to support its teaching and research missions. UMW is a public liberal arts and sciences university dedicated to effective teaching and the integration of undergraduate students in research.
