 Military & Veterans Specialist 443415 Position Type: Staff Position Number: Department: Veterans Affairs Job Summary/Basic Function: Job Summary/Basic Function: The Military and Veteran Services Specialist is the point of contact for both Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology to engage and communication with veterans, active duty military and their families. The Specialist will perform a variety of administrative functions and will work collaboratively with departments across campus to ensure compliance and timeliness of awarded veteran education benefits. Basic Function: Advise future and current students and families on available resources, application process and available benefit programs. Review and verify qualifying documents and award Hazlewood Exemption benefit according to state statute. Process and submit federal educational benefit certifications in accordance with the Veterans Administration - to include: calculation of student tuition and fees and verification of courses are applicable to student's program of study. Maintain and verify payments received are accurate for the student sponsorship billing for Post 9/11 GI Bill. Verify adherence to university degree requirements and ensure students are meeting satisfactory academic progress. Counsel active duty military students on tuition assistance process. Validate and maintain tuition assistance forms for accuracy and coordinate with Finance Office as necessary. Review and submit application waivers for active duty military and their dependents. Run and interpret reports to verify all reported data regarding benefits is accurate. Job Functions: Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): Bachelors Degree Required or equivalent work experience in higher education Proficient with computer software: Excel, Word, and Microsoft Outlook Basic math and accounting skills Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills Strong customer service skills that demonstrate a student first environment Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications (Education and Experience): Knowledge of VA-Once data system or Hazlewood Reporting Knowledge of Banner data system Previous VA or Financial Aid Office experience Proven excellent customer service Demonstrate ability to independently locate, understand policies and procedures regarding veteran benefits and financial aid Knowledge of academic, economic, social and cultural needs of military-connected students Security Sensitive Statement: This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information.
