University Communications provides support and campus leadership in planning, coordinating and implementing strategic communications programs that support Stanford and its mission. University Communications is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; oversight of digital content and top-level web and social media platforms; media relations and news services; executive communications; major publications; and a campus video production service. University Communications coordinates with communications professionals across the university.
The Institutional Communications Manager will design and implement communications strategies that inform and engage Stanford's internal and external audiences about a variety of university issues and initiatives. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, this full-time position will coordinate both proactive and reactive communications efforts on a range of institutional topics, in areas including academic initiatives, student life, business affairs, crisis response, community engagement and more. Strong writing and strategy development are essential to this work, as is the ability to consult with and advise a wide array of campus partners on communications needs in a wide and changing variety of situations and subject areas.
Your primary responsibilities include:
Develop and implement communications strategies on university issues and initiatives
Consult, advise and collaborate with campus partners and subject-matter experts on communications needs associated with a wide range of institutional topics
Write and edit communications products on university issues and initiatives, potentially including stories, web content, social media content, messaging documents, fact sheets, video scripts and constituency-tailored communications
May do newswriting on university events and institutional governance
Coordinate with University Communications colleagues (media relations, digital media, video production and others) on execution of communications projects
Support crisis communications efforts in response to events on or off campus
Support media relations efforts with research and, where needed, direct engagement with representatives of the news media
Work with campus partners on communications needs for high-profile campus events
Some after-hours work, sometimes with limited notice
Other related duties as assigned To be successful in this position, you will bring:
Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience
Exceptional writing, supported by excellent skills in research and analysis; editing and copyediting; and incorporating feedback from diverse perspectives
Significant experience in the design and execution of both proactive and reactive communication strategies involving complex issues with multiple constituencies
Strong interpersonal, collaborative and relationship management skills
Strong organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet tight deadlines
Deep thinking about complex issues, coupled with demonstrated ability to synthesize multiple dimensions of complex issues in compelling communications products
Ability to make decisions and execute in time-limited, high-visibility situations
Strong sense of self-motivation and independent follow-through
Commitment to discretion and confidentiality where needed
Familiarity with the journalism, public affairs and thought leadership space
