Job Summary Reporting to the Director of the Resnick Sustainability Institute, the Executive Director of Operations is a campus-based, leadership position that enables the RSI's strategic planning, research development, and overall educational, scientific, and engineering functions. The Executive Director of Operations will work closely with the RSI Director, four Faculty Directors (FDs), and the Executive Administrative Director, to meet RSI's goals for each aspect of its mission.
Job Duties The Executive Director of Operations holds the operational responsibility for: - the day-to-day operation of the RSI; - RSI human resources management; - RSI financial management and procurement activities; - RSI facilities management; - the RSI Phase 1 Steering Committee; - the RSI Building Committee; - the RSI Resource Centers Committee; and
The Executive Director of Operations supervises: - the director of operations, communications and creative; and - an accounts manager.
Because the RSI is in a critical formative period, names of positions, governing bodies, and management committees may change. For example, the RSI Phase 1 Steering Committee will likely evolve into an Executive Committee. However, the intent and purpose of each position, governing body, and committee is captured above. The Executive Director of Operations will also be responsible for all other duties assigned by the RSI Director.
Basic Qualifications - Advanced degree, in a relevant scientific or engineering field, required. - At least three years of experience in higher education administration required, with significant knowledge and appreciation of an elite higher education research environment preferred. - Operations leadership skills and abilities required. - Demonstrated commitment to excellence required. - Unquestioned integrity and trustworthiness required. - Demonstrated commitment to the RSI's mission and support of faculty leadership required. - Ability to make good, consistent, and fair decisions based on facts and data required. - Proven ability to anticipate critical operations issues, proactively bring them to the fore, and to lead projects to completion independently required. - Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills; excellent listening skills; ability to convey concepts in a clear, concise, and logical manner required. - Proven track record in managing competing priorities and to work effectively under pressure when facing short deadlines and multiple interruptions required. - Good judgment, discretion, tact, resilience, decisiveness, tolerance for ambiguity, adaptability, and the ability to work easily and successfully manage relationships with individuals at all levels across the RSI, campus, and partner institutions required. - Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, the principles, practices, and procedures of business and higher education operations, to include strategic planning, organization, and direction in compliance with RSI, Caltech, state, and federal regulations, required. - Ability to work diligently and with dedication to advance RSI agendas, as needed, is required. - Excellent diplomacy skills and ability to converse easily, with courtesy and clarity, with all members of the RSI community, and beyond, required. - Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and information with absolute discretion required. - Flexibility and adaptability to shifting priorities required. - Comportment as a collaborative, conscientious, and dependable colleague required. - Consistent, professional presence on campus required. - Ability to serve as a trusted advisor to the RSI Director and FDs, quickly grasping operations priorities and issues, developing well-reasoned and thoughtful strategies, and implementing strategies. - Daily professional presence and demeanor, and consistent, engaged presence within the RSI required. - Work during evenings and weekends, as needed, is required. - Attendance at RSI evening and weekend events, as needed, is required.
