Full-time research position assisting with research and development projects that include design and execution as well as supporting new grant/contract opportunities. The focus of the research is on the Multi-physics damage modelling of fiber reinforced composite materials and performance prediction. The applicant must have experience in composite materials characterization in low frequency dielectric spectroscopy, Knowledge and experience of experimental testing and characterization of fiber reinforced composite materials, including edge replication. Experience in fatigue testing, including step-loading and variable amplitude loading. Excellent record of relevant Publications. Role may include contributing to defining the research scope of the Division, leading projects, managing portions of budgets, and contributing to patentable ideas and patent applications. Activities are typically a combination of lab work (experimental and theoretical) and project management. Perform job duties under some direct supervision. General Requirements:

1. Support the establishment of the Institute of Predictive Performance Methodology (IPPM) by Developing related laboratory capabilities and expediting equipment purchases and commissioning. 2. Apply technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques (for example, low frequency dielectric spectroscopy) to develop tools for performance prediction of heterogeneous materials system. Conducting original research and publishing results and presenting papers at technical meetings and representing the Center. 3. Developing laboratory protocols and training for Center personnel. Supervise junior staff, students, and interns. 4. Work with Multidisciplinary project teams to develop, track, and deliver project task on time. 5. Identify relevant funding opportunities; contribute to or lead writing efforts (proposals, publications, reports, presentations, etc.).
Identify funding opportunities and prepare and submit proposals to government agencies, industry, and academic partners; supporting Center efforts to secure funding for research. 6. Participate in developing academic and industry collaborations. 7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Assist with Conference, Symposium and other events.
Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering or science discipline plus eight (8) years of relevant experience or Master’s degree in relevant engineering or science discipline plus five (5) years of relevant experience or PhD in relevant engineering or science discipline plus two (2) years of relevant experience.
Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering plus at least one (1) year of experience. Manufacturing of composite materials and adhesively bonded joint. Knowledge about ASTM standards of testing and characterization of composite materials and adhesively bonded joints.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience in Composite material characterization, testing and manufacturing. Solid Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, Numerical Modelling, MatLab, C, Python CAD, COMSOL, ANSYS. Edge replication for damage evaluation. Fatigue testing, including step-loading and variable amplitude loading. Surface free energy measurements. Scanning electro Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, Fiber optic sensor installation and data analysis.
