The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) is looking for a highly motivated communications professional to join our communications team. The Director, External and Member Communications will help to lead the strategy development and execution of all IDFA communications and marketing with key stakeholders, with a focus on managing digital content production, message development, media relations, member communications, event and product marketing, positioning subject matter experts, and management of IDFA’s brand and reputation. Working with the Senior Vice President, you will strengthen and build awareness of IDFA’s mission to advance our agenda. Through your efforts, our reputation as a trusted representative for the dairy industry will grow even stronger among a wide variety of stakeholders including IDFA members, members of Congress, federal agency officials, experts and leaders from related food and agriculture trade associations, and dairy advocates. This position reports to the SVP, Executive & Strategic Communications. This position manages at least 1 position, Manager, Multimedia and Digital Communications.

Bachelor's degree required in Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
Must have some experience leading communications for an organization focused on policy, legislation and/or regulation.
Must have established relationships with media, as well as a demonstrated ability to place earned media and speak on the record with journalists.
A gifted writer and editor with experience developing remarks, statements, articles, talking points, and testimony for leaders and executives.
Experience managing or producing multimedia content including video, audio, social media posts, and graphics.
Experience successfully positioning subject-matter experts with national, regional, and trade media to achieve high-impact results.
Experience marketing events and products via email, trade media, and web and social.
Ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues and information to diverse audiences in creative ways.
Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills with strong attention to detail and a passion for helping bring out the best in colleagues in a team-based environment.
Management experience is a plus.
Adaptable under pressure and able to reprioritize and delegate work among the team in response to shifting goals or priorities.
Strong analytical, critical, and strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Works with the SVP, Executive & Strategic Communications, association staff, subject-matter experts, member company communicators, and vendors to support the development and execution of communications strategies and advocacy and marketing campaigns to advance IDFA’s mission, goals, and strategic plan.
Execute the day-to-day operations of IDFA’s external affairs and member communications functions, including branding, messaging, planning and maintaining a communications calendar; proactively planning end-to-end workflows; media relations; leadership and expert positioning; and remaining knowledgeable and informed about the status of all tasks that fall under the communications function.
Lead IDFA’s media outreach efforts, including initiating media contacts, press briefings, and interviews; providing talking points and other materials as needed for senior staff; and responding to media inquiries quickly and effectively.
Help to manage and coordinate the production of a diverse range of products (including policy briefs, speeches/testimony, videos, infographics, etc.) tailored to specific audiences to help advocate on behalf of IDFA members.
Collaborate with staff to craft press releases, official statements, opinion pieces, and blog posts; devise strategic dissemination strategies; and create and manage innovative advocacy campaigns and related events.
Effectively manage the association’s digital function, including web, social media and content production. Help to manage the organization’s marketing of events and products across owned resources as well as email, web, and trade media.
Establish metrics and regularly evaluate the results and impact of our communications efforts; report internally on developments and trends within the industry.
Manage vendor contracts to ensure efficient use of IDFA resources.
Support the implementation of policy and advocacy strategies designed to advance IDFA’s policy and regulatory priorities and vision through legislative, regulatory, and non-regulatory work with government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels.
Help to develop and manage research products and survey data to advance advocacy positions on issues and policies.
Provide advice and expertise to senior leaders and other staff on a range of communications and outreach issues, methods, and approaches, with the goal of bringing out the best in colleagues in a team-based environment.
Supervise at least one direct report and cultivate their professional growth.
