The Director of the Military and Veterans Psychology Program is responsible for the leadership and supervision of twin innovative programs at William James College (WJC) that bring qualified veterans into careers in behavioral health. The Director will serve as the academic leader of a specialized academic concentration in Military and Veterans Psychology that currently serves approximately 40 students in the clinical and counseling programs. This program is designed to offer professional education and training to a strong cohort of veterans in order to best address and serve the mental health needs of active duty military, veterans and their families. The Director will also have primary oversight over the signature WJC program Train Vets to Treat Vets (TVTV), a long-standing WJC collaboration with the Massachusetts legislature that spotlights, through research and community initiatives, the critical roles that military veterans can fulfill as behavioral health leaders. To maintain the quality and viability of training, the Director will likewise work closely with the Field Education Department to develop and support MVP-specific practicum and advanced practicum training sites throughout greater Boston. In addition, to preserve and foster an already well-established campus awareness of military culture and the higher education needs of veterans, the Director will develop and monitor the quality of extracurricular small-group experiential learning groups for students, learning opportunities for faculty and staff (to better understand the needs of veteran students), and community-based initiatives to sustain our highly supportive military and veterans community at the College. The Director will also work to sustain and expand collaborative partnerships with veterans’ services leaders throughout the New England area, and will participate in college-based advancement and research funding efforts.
Depending on academic discipline and credentials, the Director will have an appointment in one of the College’s academic departments, Clinical Psychology, Counseling, School Psychology or Organizational & Leadership Psychology, and assume teaching and advising duties and other responsibilities as assigned. Psychologists and Counselor Educators with prior military service and/or a clearly established program of research in military and veterans psychology are highly encouraged to apply. Current MVP courses include Military Psychology and Culture; Military Families and the Cycle of Deployment; Trauma and the Military; Psychoactive Substance Abuse in Military and Veteran Communities. The Director will teach one or more of these courses.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Develop strong relationships with veteran and military organizations and other veteran groups to create partnerships and to generate enrollment for WJC’s academic programs.
Exercise oversight of military student services, including admissions, registration and advising in coordination with department chairs.
Serve as an effective and engaged graduate school teacher and advisor.
Lead the faculty participating in the MVP and TVTV programs.
Actively work on building and sustaining a supportive environment and activities for the College’s military and veterans student community.
Oversee communications and compliance with state and federal agencies.
Collaborate with faculty and staff on campus events related to veterans’ concerns.
Actively seek new opportunities to develop strategic partnerships with military friendly businesses and organizations. Coordinate partnerships that advance the strategic program goals at the College.
Design and implement a strategy and process for sponsorship solicitation that aligns with the College’s advancement approach.
Research potential corporate sponsors and prepare periodic reports in consultation with the Vice President for Advancement and the College President.
Develop requests based on short, intermediate and long-term funding goals of the College.
Responsible for the creation and submittal of appropriate grants and contracts.
Work with the College’s Admissions and Marketing departments to increase enrollment and build articulation agreements.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Doctoral degree in Psychology, Counselor Education, School Psychology or Organizational and Leadership Psychology;
Licensure preferred - if candidate’s degree is in a licensable discipline;
2 to 5 years’ experience in a leadership position;
Excellent time management and problem solving skills;
Sound judgment in complex and sensitive situations;
Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and responsibilities;

Supervisory skills and effectiveness;
