Environmental/Water Resources Engineering Faculty Position

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) of Southern Methodist University (SMU) seeks to fill an environmental/water resources engineering faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor or Professor (Position No. 53589). Distinguished candidates at the full professor level can be considered for endowment as the Solomon Professor for Global Development (for consideration, apply to Position No. 53812). The Solomon Professor position will be affiliated as a Senior Fellow with the Hunter and Stephanie Hunt Institute (HI) for Engineering and Humanity at the Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering at SMU (http://www.smu.edu/Lyle/Institutes/HuntInstitute).
Successful candidates must have a PhD degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering or a related field, and are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to environmental/water resources engineering. Successful candidates are also expected to develop an innovative, externally funded, research program; supervise graduate student theses; and participate in interdisciplinary efforts within the School.
The department seeks candidates with core expertise in water processes in engineered and/or natural environments and interdisciplinary research interests related to the department’s themes:
- Smart and Resilient Infrastructure and Environment, such as: Smart and connected communities; infrastructure, resource, and community interdependency and resilience; health monitoring and preserving aging infrastructure; and smart and sustainable infrastructure and resources; integration of sensing, informatics, modeling, and probabilistic methods into the planning, design, and management of environmental and water infrastructure and resources; .
- Global and Sustainable Development, such as: Water, energy, food nexus; sustainable energy recovery from waste and wastewater; integrated water cycle engineering, such as ‘One Water;’ infrastructure and resource planning for an inclusive economy; sustainable materials and design; impacts of climate change and population growth on infrastructure and resources; linkage between human activities, infrastructure, the environment, and health; green and livable communities; and land-use and infrastructure interactions for smart urban growth.
The CEE Department offers ABET accredited B.S. degrees in both civil engineering and environmental engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil and environmental engineering, as well as an M.A. degree in Sustainability and Development. The department has well equipped laboratory facilities with extensive biological and chemical instrumentation.
