The Graphic Design Program in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Graphic Design at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin September 2020.
The Graphic Design Program seeks applications from candidates who possess expertise in the critical, historical, and theoretical aspects of communications design, and an awareness of how the discipline is evolving. A successful candidate thinks of design broadly, will be able to apply their expertise to teach UI/UX, as well as motion graphics, experience design, data visualization, and/or other emergent technologies, and wishes to cultivate cross-disciplinary opportunities across the University that expand the model for design education in a research institution with a commitment to publicly-engaged scholarship. A record of creative scholarship, research focus, and/or professional practice is required.
The Department of Arts, Culture, and Media (ACM) combines an interdisciplinary community-oriented core curriculum taken by all majors in the department with discipline-based majors in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Art History, Journalism, Music, Theater, and Video Production.
With a faculty that includes nationally and internationally recognized scholars and artists, ACM offers innovative courses with an emphasis on integration in the arts and the RU-N’s urban mission of community engagement. Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be responsible for undergraduate teaching in the area of Graphic Design, curriculum development, student advising, active engagement in the shared responsibilities of departmental service and faculty governance, and service to the university and community. The candidate will also be expected to develop their own research practice and undertake independent scholarly activities appropriate for advancement within Rutgers University.
Requirements: M.F.A. in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Interactive Design or equivalent related discipline from an accredited institution; relevant teaching experience; a developing record of scholarly work and/or a clear research agenda, demonstrating the ability to build a body of recognized work suitable for tenure at a research university.
