Support the Human Factors Engineering function in collaboration with project teams to ensure optimal usability characteristics and use safety of current and future Alcon products. • This role provides integrated support, collaboratively with the Industrial Design function, to surgical instrumentation product teams. This role supports the development of instrumentation and digital-based products that comply with global market access regulatory requirements and meet best-in-class market expectations for usability, and use safety. • Develop and execute HFE plans for best in class usability and requirements of medical device regulatory agencies around the world (FDA HFE Guideline, IEC 62366, IEC 60601-1-6 etc). • Provide input to support product compliance to all applicable standards including IEC, ISO and ANSI. • Identify, define, analyze, validate and report on Human Factors Engineering and Usability considerations for product teams and ensure incorporation into the Alcon product development process. • Serve as the user/patient advocate, ensuring user needs are properly developed, communicated and met by the products through the conduct of interviews and surveys to collect information on topics such as use-related requirements, use risks, needs, user profiles, task analysis and user interfaces. • Providing inputs for all touchpoints, both digital and hardware based, to deliver a consistent user experience for the next generation surgical instrumentation portfolio as assessed through formative and summative evaluations. • Provide early stage HFE input based on research, evaluations and literature to the product teams to enable design of hardware and digital based user interfaces. • Perform task analyses, use related risk analyses, and heuristic analyses and contextual inquires during the development phase for Alcon products. • Plan and execute formative and summative studies throughout the development and validation of the Alcon products. • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including engineering, industrial design, marketing, regulatory, and clinical areas to develop best in class medical devices at Alcon. • Ensure high quality interactions with customers and members of the organization at all technical and management levels and serve as a role model for values and behaviors within the organization. • Perform every aspect of user research including user interviews, behavior analysis and user experience studies for a global market. • Interpret and communicate user feedback & requirements into relevant design specifications to be shared across corporate divisions. • Communicate human factors design input specifications to hardware and software development teams, leveraging state of the art methods for developing prototypes and obtaining appropriate feedback on usability and functions to drive development. • Contribute to design review meetings giving adequate representation of human factors deliverables and associated decisions to project teams and R&D governance bodies, as assessed by internal customers and supervisor.
Bachelor’s Degree with 2 Years of Relevant Human Factors Experience or Equivalent years of directly related experience (High school +10yrs; Associates +6yrs; M.S.+0yrs). • Degrees in related fields such as Behavioral Psychology, Human Factors Psychology or Biomedical Engineering will be considered with appropriate supplemental experience in human factors or usability evaluation activities within a safety-critical industry • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English. • Exhibit strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple project deliverables, as assessed by supervisor. • Prior human factors engineering position or similar role within the medical device industry. • Experience in human factors or usability evaluation activities within a safety-critical industry.
Preferred • Master’s Degree in Human Factors Engineering with 5 years industry experience or PhD in Human Factors
