Postdoctoral Research Associate
Princeton University
Princeton University One or more postdoctoral, or more senior research associate positions, are available at Princeton University in the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. Associates will join a new research group run by assistant professor Jesse Jenkins, jointly appointed with the Andlinger Center and Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and focus on the techno-economic assessment of novel low-carbon energy technologies and their role in a decarbonized electricity sector. Examples include natural gas-fired power plants with flexible carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), enhanced geothermal energy systems, and/or long-duration, low-cost energy storage technologies. Individuals with expertise in energy systems and a PhD in relevant fields (including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering, energy resources, and operations research) are encouraged to apply. All candidates must have strong, demonstrated research ability, be very comfortable in an interdisciplinary research environment, excellent English written and spoken communication skills, and a PhD in a relevant field. The appointment will be for one year, with one year planned renewal contingent on performance and funding.About the research programThis research effort will employ both electricity system optimization models (at the regional power system level) and plant-level process and design optimization to generate insight on the cost and performance thresholds necessary for novel technologies to become competitive and impactful in a decarbonized electricity system. The work will also identify engineering opportunities to improve key performance metrics. The group will select specific research topics in consultation with early-stage energy technology companies, program directors at government RD&D funding agencies, such as ARPA-E, early-stage energy technology investors, and/or electric utilities. Findings are intended to both advance scholarly research and help guide and inform practical decisions by technology developers, funders/investors, and potential customers. The program is looking for candidates with one or more of the following qualities and expertise:*Expertise in combustion, carbon capture processes, energy storage, and/or fluid mechanics. *Expertise in energy systems modeling. *Familiarity with algebraic modeling languages used for linear and mixed integer programming (e.g. Julia/JuMP, Python/Pyomo, AMPL, GAMS).Application process Applicants must apply online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/13561 and submit a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references. The candidate is subject to the University's background check policy.Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
