This position is one of three Training and Compliance Specialist positions that supports the mission of the Office of the JHU Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) to assure university compliance with federal regulations and policies governing the use of animals in research and teaching and to assure that the animal program remains fully accredited.
Arranging and managing the Committee’s Spring and Fall inspections of all areas of JHU in which animals are housed or used in research (current database contains over 875 labs/rooms).
This includes updating and managing the ACUC animal use locations database used to generate inspection forms, create deficiency notices, manage follow-up visits/communication for deficiency corrections, and create required reports.
Managing the evaluation and approval of new Satellite Housing locations as well as collaborating with and advising the Research Animal Resources Satellite Housing Coordinator carrying out the bi-monthly rounds to those locations.
Preparing communication materials (emails, postcards, handouts, billboards) for communicating policies/guidance for investigators as needed.
The individual in this position works with the Senior and the other Training and Compliance Specialist to:
Fact-find and evaluate animal welfare concerns reported to the ACUC.
Carry out hands-on training for procedures in animals with lab members as needed/requested.
Carry out routine post-approval monitoring visits to laboratories, including focused inspections (e.g., surgery records) in Summer and Winter.
Attend joint meetings with members of Research Animal Resources and assisting in site visits (e.g., by accrediting body, USDA inspections) as needed.
Draft new ACUC topical guidelines as requested.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Psychology, Behavioral Biology or other scientific field required.
Some laboratory animal research or laboratory animal care is required.
Four years of related experience preferred.
LAT or LATG certification or veterinary technician training strongly preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communications skills required.
Must be computer literate, and able to work with office management, presentation and training software.
Excellent interpersonal skills required.
Must be able to communicate tactfully.
Ability to work cooperatively with others required.
Attention to detail required.
Will need to become familiar with federal regulations and policies regarding the roles and responsibilities of Animal Care and Use Committees if not already conversant.
