League of American Orchestras
For more than 75 years, the League of American Orchestras has led, supported, and championed America’s orchestras and the vitality of the music they perform. The only national organization dedicated solely to furthering the orchestral experience, the League is committed to furthering field innovation and learning, as a response to socio-demographic, technological and cultural change.
Today, the League’s serves a diverse membership of more than 2,000 organizations and individuals across North America, from world-renowned orchestras to community groups, from summer festivals to conservatories, and youth ensembles. Thanks to the League, these organizations – and the managers, artists, trustees and volunteers who work with them – convene at conferences and events; are inspired by the award-winning Symphony magazine; and benefit from vital industry reports, leadership programs and grant opportunities.
The League’s committed staff works to serve its members with exemplary programs, publications and events, supported by a clear mission, an established reputation and support base, and an active board. Major investments in new technologies and office space, as well as in organizational development work around equity, diversity and inclusion, are laying the foundations for ensuring that the current momentum and opportunity for innovation continues to expand into the future.
Position Summary:
The position is one of two Directors of Learning and Leadership Programs, reporting to the Vice President of Knowledge, Learning and Leadership (Karen Yair) and responsible for the supervision of one direct report. It operates as part of the nine-person Knowledge, Learning and Leadership team.
The Director leads content delivery for the League’s annual National Conference, and for flagship professional development programs including the annual residential course for the next generation of orchestra leaders, Essentials of Orchestra Management. The Director works closely with distinguished faculty in management and the arts, to present this and other learning opportunities for orchestra staff, boards and volunteers.
As the League seeks to broaden and deepen its impact, the Director has the opportunity to further its strategic aims. Specifically, the Director will work to advance the League’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (see https://americanorchestras.org/about-the-league/diversity-statement.html) through program design and delivery; to lead implementation of the League’s digital learning plan; and to optimize the potential for program development within the League’s new website (launching summer 2020). Leadership of this impactful program portfolio offers a unique opportunity to support the evolution of orchestras as they innovate and engage ever more meaningfully with the diverse communities they serve.

Qualifications:
We anticipate that candidates will demonstrate progressive experience in non-profit work, and a proven track record in successful program development, delivery and administration. We will be looking for proven strengths in problem solving and in strategic and analytical thinking; as well as a capacity for innovation, coupled with sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
We will also be assessing applications for evidence of expertise in adult learning / professional development needed in order for the successful applicant to act as a specialist advisor to senior managers. Knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of symphony orchestras and the opportunities and challenges they face will be beneficial. Candidates may also have a specialist interest in relevant content areas such as governance, civic engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, capitalization, and / or artistic vibrancy.
We anticipate that candidates will display strong project management and people management capabilities, coupled with the ability to balance multiple programmatic and organizational demands. Their work history should demonstrate their initiative and team orientation, as well as their communication and interpersonal skills, and their ability to proactively build strong working relationships both within the team and across the organization.
