A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A CYBERSECURITY SPECIALIST
As a Cybersecurity Specialist, you are helping to grow our security operations center (SOC) which also supports member cooperatives in our region. As a guard at the gate of our critical infrastructure, you ensure that nothing gets in or out without permission. However, you don’t just stand there and wait for threats to appear, but are proactive in finding weaknesses by auditing our system and conducting risk assessments. You conduct regular cybersecurity audits for both best practices and North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP) requirements.
You monitor our systems, networks, and data for indicators of suspicious activity. Using various security tools and methods, you deploy the countermeasures necessary to mitigate any threats and vulnerabilities You provide real-time status reports on any open incidents, our current vulnerabilities, and our overall cybersecurity posture. You establish metrics and provide scheduled reports. Based on your security knowledge, you produce policies, procedures, and other documentation. You assist with implementing mature security processes and workflow management for incident identification, triage, response, and remediation.
Though your job is analytical, you also collaborate regularly with internal teams as well as outside consultants, vendors, contractors, and federal assessment teams. Acting as a subject matter expert (SME), you enhance organizational threat and vulnerability awareness by providing cybersecurity training to employees and providing security help desk support. You are passionate about ensuring that everyone across our organization understands the trade-off between risk and return! You also educate decision-makers on the cybersecurity risks that new technologies, applications, or systems might introduce to our cooperative.
In order to support the cybersecurity community, you report to agencies such as US-CERT and other critical infrastructure cyber incident reporting organizations. To ensure future compliance, you research the direction that the federal government and other regulatory bodies are going in terms of audit and technical requirements. Regularly, you assess and inventory our current technology assets. You also evaluate and recommend security products, services. and procedures to enhance our productivity and effectiveness. You find your job engaging, loving both its analytical and interpersonal aspects!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CYBERSECURITY SPECIALIST
Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity or a related field
10+ years of relevant experience including professional experience working in a security operations center (SOP) or as part of a cyber incident response team (CIRT)
Experience with NERC CIP or other federal audits
Demonstrated ability to develop IT security standards and procedures
Knowledge of national and international regulatory compliances and frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST 800-53, ISO, COBIT, and NERC CIP
IT security professional certification such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Auditor (CISA) is preferred but multiple factors will be taken into consideration. Experience in law enforcement or national security would be a big plus! Are you a problem solver who works well both independently and as part of a team?
