The Department consists of two divisions: The Parks and Landscape Division and the Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD). The Department is responsible for planning, acquiring and managing the County's open space system, which includes more than 16,000 acres of open space and more than 250 miles of public trails, as well as the County's park system with five regional parks, eight neighborhood parks and six paved multi-use paths. In addition, the Department works closely and collaboratively with private organizations and public agencies within the county that manage and preserve open space lands, parks and protected environmental sanctuaries, including Marin Municipal Water District, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, California State Parks and National Marine Sanctuaries. The County's park and open space systems are enjoyed by millions of visitors annually. ABOUT THE POSITION: Current Vacancy: Full-Time Fixed-Term position that will end on June 30, 2022. Please note, the position may end prior to 2 years if funding ceases or the work is complete. In addition, the position may continue after 2 years if funding is renewed or extended. Per PMR 48.2, fixed-term employees are not subject to Reduction in Force rights at the completion of the term. Marin County Park Rangers positively interact with a wide variety of people, collect fees and reconcile receipts, prepare sports fields, provide special events and educational programs to the public, and are familiar with the operation of a variety of landscape maintenance and construction tools and equipment to perform minor carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, irrigation repair and electrical maintenance work of developed parks and recreational areas. ABOUT YOU: Our Highly Qualified Candidate will have personal and professional integrity, be highly organized, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service by working effectively will all visitors and members of the public. They will be able to work independently for extended periods in remote locations, off-hours and weekend schedules. The ideal candidate has experience operating, maintaining and hauling motorized equipment, including but not limited to tractors, trailers, chainsaws, mowers and other small power equipment. In addition, the ideal candidate has work experience in the field of landscape maintenance, hardscape maintenance, turf maintenance, irrigation repair and sports field maintenance. Experience providing excellent customer service to diverse populations, including educating and enforcing rules and regulations as well as assisting the public in emergencies and stressful situations is ideal. The Park Ranger Minimum Qualifications are: Two years of experience in park and/or landscape maintenance or development. Experience in dealing with the public is desirable. Training and/or education in park or resource management, horticulture, environmental studies or a field related to the work may be substituted for the experience outlined above on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of one year. Certificates and Licenses: May be required to obtain California Pest Control Applicator's and/or Certified Pool Operator certificate within one year of appointment, depending on assignment. Ability to obtain standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate within one year of appointment. Ability to successfully complete POST Certified PC832 Powers of Arrest training or approved similar training within one year of appointment. Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicle is required at time of appointment.
