Example Of Duties - Plans, organizes, assigns, implements and manages engineering projects in accordance with budget and schedule requirements
- Interacts with user departments in response to service requests; researches and gathers all necessary details to determine engineering functional requirements to meet project user’s needs
- Provides engineering design services and design support during construction; provides support for project bid and award phase, construction management, closeout, activation and startup activities for bus and rail transit projects
- Supports development of work plans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements and operational needs for design projects
- Assures project compliance with design criteria and standards, work plans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements and operational needs
- Participates in the engineering configuration management process to maintain current engineering records for bus and rail facilities and systems
- Reviews contract documents for compliance with design codes and standards, design criteria and policies and procedures; and substantiates contractor invoices
- Supports development of safety, security systems, facilities, and quality assurance certification standards
- Reviews designs for quality, constructability and cost effectiveness; recommends design changes
- Works with in-house engineering and construction disciplines, consultants and/or contractors to identify and resolve problems which may impact the progress of the project or users existing or planned operational performance
- Provides technical support during contract bidding, negotiation, and award processes
- Provides resident engineer/quality control inspection services
- Communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures in support of the agency's safety vision and goals; and maintains accountability for the safety performance of all subordinate employees
- Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out
Preferred Qualifications Preferred Qualifications (PQs) are used to identify relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as determined by business necessity. These criteria are considered preferred qualifications and are not intended to serve as minimum requirements for the position. PQs will help support selection decisions throughout the recruitment. The following are the preferred qualifications: - Experience in the delivery of large rail system engineering and facilities projects, project management professional experience, rail design, and construction of public agency transit systems, or communication engineering public works projects
- EIT (Engineer in Training) Certificate from the State of California
- Ability to lead multi-discipline wayside engineering and maintenance design and construction projects from concept to completion. Knowledge and experience of public agency procurement processes
- Five or more years of full-time engineering experience working on rail transit or public agency building projects
Knowledge: - Theories, principles, and current practices of engineering design and construction in appropriate discipline
- Fundamentals of architectural design, structural, mechanical, electrical, vehicle, systems and environmental engineering as they relate to assigned engineering discipline
- Engineering mathematics and computer applications
- Contract administration and budgeting
- Project management and control practices
- Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing engineering design, construction, and safety practices, local building and zoning codes
Abilities: - Perform complex engineering design work in assigned discipline
- Serve as lead for in-house specialized engineering activities for bus and rail transit engineering projects from conception to completion
- Monitor and evaluate work by consultants and construction contractors
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
- Compile, analyze and interpret complex data in order to prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence
- Use computer-aided tools and products
- Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
