The Department of History welcomes applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The position will focus on public history, with a preference for a specialization in digital history. Secondary specialization is open to any field.
One of the primary responsibilities of the position is teaching. The appointed candidate will typically teach five courses per year, including undergraduate and graduate courses in public history and the secondary area of specialization. At the undergraduate level, the candidate will have responsibilities in teaching writing- intensive seminars and professional development courses. At the graduate level, the candidate will teach and develop courses for the public history track and other areas of the curriculum, and will mentor students and serve on committees. The candidate will maintain and expand the internship program.
A second responsibility of the position is to engage in research and public outreach. The selected candidate will conduct research in public history, publish in peer-reviewed venues and develop exhibits or other public-oriented projects in digital or physical format. Research duties also involve grant writing and developing long-term collaborations with local and regional organizations and communities.
Finally, the successful candidate will serve in departmental, college and university committees, and contribute to the governance of professional organizations, participate in peer-reviewing, and conduct professionally-related outreach activities.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. (or completed requirements for the Ph.D) in History or closely related degree with a history focus (e.g., African American Studies, American Studies, Latino Studies, Public History, Women Studies, area studies) by the time of application; formal graduate training in public history (i.e., graduate- level or post-graduate coursework, publications in peer-reviewed public history venues) or at least three years of full-time employment working in a historical venues) or at least three years of full-time employment working in a historical organization or museum; experience in teaching at the collegiate level; evidence of scholarly writing or creative activity that results in publication(s) in peer-reviewed venues, presentation(s) at national-level professional conferences, professionally reviewed public history project(s), or successful grantmanship. Preferred qualifications include: peer-reviewed publication(s); collegiate teaching experience as an instructor of record in history; experience developing and executing public history projects; and experience developing and executing digital history projects.
