The Department of Public Relations in the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications (CJC) invites applications for a full-time (nine- or twelve-month) public relations lecturer position to begin August 2020. We seek a colleague who identifies as a change-maker with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following communications areas: Social media, digital communications, influencer relations, social change and activism, international public relations, pop culture, sports, fashion, tourism and entertainment. We seek a colleague with a vision to shape public relations curriculum, who can prepare students to be stewards of the profession and their communities in a radically changing world.
Lecturer faculty expectations include teaching three to four undergraduate public relations courses or graduate courses per semester (depending on service assignments), either online or face-to-face; developing new undergraduate courses; being a dedicated participant in department-related faculty activities; and remaining active and engaged in the public relations or strategic communications industry. Additional responsibilities may include advising student-related professional activities and immersion programs, acting as a liaison between the department and the industry, mentoring students in internship/job search and placement, engaging in governance and building on the momentum to improve diversity in the department and across the industry.
The Department of Public Relations is one of the top public relations programs in the country, with nine tenure-track faculty members, one endowed chair in public interest communications, and four full-time lecturers. It serves more than 790 undergraduate majors, 26 master's students, and 11 Ph.D. students. Faculty research focuses on societal and organization/public issues, including ethics, gender and diversity, multicultural impact, social responsibility and civic engagement in areas like social media, environmental, health, employee communication and politics.
The Department of Public Relations is committed to educating the standard bearers of the profession for an interdependent local and global society. With the support of the department, public relations students recently founded the nation's first Hispanic Public Relations Student Association and the second chapter of the Black Public Relations Student Society. The public relations undergraduate program is certified (CEPR) by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The department faculty advises UF's award-winning Public Relations Student Society of America chapter, and Alpha PRoductions, a student-run public relations agency. The faculty also fields a team of students each year for PRSA's Bateman Competition.
The College of Journalism and Communications (www.jou.ufl.edu) has 74 full-time faculty members teaching in four departments: Advertising, Journalism, Public Relations and Telecommunication. A recognized national leader in the field, the College is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). The College also houses a full-service communications agency, led by professionals and staffed by students.

Qualifications A bachelor's or master's degree in public relations, communications or a related field is required. Applicants must have at least five years of professional communications experience. Previous teaching experience at the university level is a plus. Special consideration will be given to applicants with recent frontline experience in the field. Effective candidates will enjoy guiding and coaching students in a classroom environment.
