Its vision is to create healthy communities free from violence and oppression, in which all women and children can reach their full potential. Since its founding 30 years ago, KAN-WIN has grown to become one of the premier agencies in the United States with expertise in serving Asian American and immigrant survivors of gender- based violence. Through a set of intensive wrap-around services, including a multilingual 24-hour hotline, legal advocacy, transitional housing program, individual and group counseling, and peer advocacy leadership development, KAN-WIN helps address complex and unique barriers that many immigrant survivors face as they seek to escape from abuse. All KAN-WIN’s services are free and confidential, and it strives to provide them in the survivor’s native language. Previously, KAN-WIN went by the name of “Korean American Women in Need.” In 2013, it decided to go solely by “KAN-WIN” because its clientele became much more diverse since opening its doors. With the name change, KAN-WIN is demonstrating its commitment to meeting the greater diversity of cultural and linguistic needs among Asian Americans in the greater Chicago area. Opportunity Summary: KAN-WIN is seeking its next Executive Director after a 12-year successful tenure with its departing Director. The ideal new Director will be a collaborative leader with vision and understanding of the intersectionality of gender, social, and racial justice. The candidate must be culturally informed and possess a talent for inspiring staff and volunteers, as well as demonstrated experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, and managing collaborations and partner relationships. While the Director will spend most of their time externally facing and on organizational strategy, they will be overseeing a team responsible for fiscal and program management, operations, and communications/marketing. The Executive Director is supported by two senior program directors, and a growing administrative/operations team of staff and outsourced contractors. Responsibilities: Management & Strategy (Approximately 10% of the position) - Leads the board in developing and maintaining a strategic planning process with long-range and short-range objectives. Ensures that the strategic plan aligns with the overall mission.
- Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of annual plans and programming. Oversees the implementation of KAN-WIN’s day-to-day programs.
- Actively models and reinforces organizational culture and values. Proactively manages major organizational decisions and high-profile situations.
- Ensures sustainability, accountability, and accessibility of services consistent with the organizational mission, goals, and objectives.
Development and External Affairs (Approximately 35% of the position) - Leads the development team in meeting fundraising goals, including corporate, foundation, and government support, special events fundraisers, individual and board giving, and in-kind contributions.
- Ensures that income is comprehensive and diversified. Actively seeks new opportunities for funding.
- Works with the board and designated staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit individual donors. Increases number of donors and size of gifts.
- Oversees the staff that have direct responsibility for the grantmaking program. Ensures submission of and compliance with grant commitments and funder regulations, including timely submission of proposals and progress reports.
- Develops collaborative relationships with funders, donors, organizations, and government agencies who can assist in fundraising efforts.
- Serves as the lead public representative of KAN-WIN in events, media and other fundraising and other public relations efforts. Oversees media and communications strategies and including press events, production of media materials and publications.
- Guides development of social media channels to create strong brand awareness and activate an online community of supporters.
Collaborations and Strategic Partnerships: (25% of the position) - Enhances KAN-WIN’s image by being active locally, regionally, and nationally, especially in the gender-based violence organizations. Builds strategic alliances and collaborations. Leads and/or participates in coalition meetings.
- Represents KAN-WIN on key advocacy issues by serving as a board or committee member, panelist, or speaker on relevant platforms or in publications.
Financial Management (Approximately 15% of the position) - Ensures sound fiscal management ensuring agency is financially viable and sustainable with the resources to meet current and projected program growth.
- Develops with treasurer the annual operating budget for board approval.
- Works with auditor and treasurer to ensure that annual audit is conducted for board approval.
- Tracks expenses and revenue with staff and works with accounting service to provide financial statements to the board on a regular basis.
- Reviews and approves government grant proposals and major funding requests prior to submission.
- Works collaboratively with financial committee to ensure stable cash flow.
- Ensures financial protocols are followed. Ensures compliance with all applicable IRS, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations, and funder regulations.
- Ensures accountability by fostering an organization that supports client services and responsive communication but also cost-effective decision-making at all levels.
Personnel Management (approximately 10% of the position) - Ensures that human resources policies are updated, reviewed, and followed as appropriate. Ensures that legal HR requirements are followed.
- Develops and reviews staffing plan. Builds strong, collaborative relationships with staff, specifically with a high-performing senior leadership team, and plays an active role in attracting, retaining, and develop talents. Develops staff, ensures that talent is identified, coached, and made ready for leadership and succession opportunities.
- Hires, supervises, and mentors assigned staff, prepares evaluations for all direct reports, conducts necessary disciplinary, terminations, and other personnel actions in accordance with personnel policies.
- Conducts weekly staff meetings to enhance internal communication, leveraging collaborations among staff, and staff development.
Board (Approximately 5% of the position) - Serves as primary organizational liaison to the Board of Directors, including building relationships with new and prospective board members and board development. Assists in board development, including executive director and board succession planning.
- Facilitates the board’s decision-making by providing accurate and timely information, recommending appropriate agency action and ensuring policy and program implementation.
- Works with board to monitor organizational policies and practices.
- Works closely with executive committee to prepare quarterly board meetings, keep minutes. Ensures stewardship of official documents and records. Ensures adequate staff support for board committees.
Other - Protects KAN-WIN by keeping information confidential.

- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, fax, copiers, scanners, filing cabinets.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently uses hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 40 pounds.
- Travel between two office is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle.
- Occasional night and weekend hours are required. Occasional national travel trips are required.
