Riverdale Country School is a preK - 12 day school in New York City committed to empowering lifelong learners by developing minds, building character, and creating community in order to change our world for the good.
Riverdale’s History Department is seeking an enthusiastic, collegial and knowledgeable faculty member to help develop deep historical understanding in students. This position could be a combination of Middle and Upper School teaching, though the exact parameters depend on the candidate’s strengths. Our curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary learning.
Our curricula includes: history of New York City in 6th grade; simulation based Civics course in 7th grade; comparative ancient cultures course in 8th grade; a two year world history sequence in 9th and 10th grades; electives dictated both by departmental need and faculty interest and expertise; “Constructing America,” an 11th grade American Studies course team-taught by History and English faculty; Integrated Liberal Studies, a required senior course that examines the questions, “Who are we?” and “How are we meant to live?” Teachers with interest and ability to teach the aforementioned Constructing America course are sought, as well as those with expertise in non-Western history. Regardless of the course, our ideal candidate will help students learn formal historical analysis in addition to making connections to contemporary life.
All candidates for Riverdale teaching positions should demonstrate an interest in engaging students in an environment that is both supportive and rigorous and will participate in community activities including advising groups, service opportunities, or other co-curricular activities. Our Middle School and Upper School are located together on the Hill Campus, so candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching across the divisions are especially attractive. A Bachelor's degree is required; Masters and Doctoral degree holders will receive additional consideration, as will those with previous teaching experience.
