About Hannon Library Hannon Library is the heart of Southern Oregon University (SOU), a mid-sized regional, public university in the beautiful Rogue Valley. Library services and collections align with our primary mission of supporting student learning and success. Located in Ashland, a mountain town that combines a small-town feel with urban-level cultural opportunities like plays, music, and food, SOU attracts many students who are interested in the arts and outdoor recreation. The university is committed to innovative programs like outdoor adventure leadership and digital cinema as well as proven successes such as business and education. It also provides outstanding graduate programs, champion athletic teams, and the Oregon Center for the Arts. In 2005, Hannon Library was renovated and expanded and is known on campus for its abundance of natural light, art exhibits, coffee shop, group study rooms, and welcoming spaces. Students use the library every day for researching, studying, writing papers, collaborating with peers, or receiving tutoring assistance. Our print collections include over 340,000 print volumes and 300,000 government publications. Online holdings include access to over 210,000 e-books and 27,000 e-journals, as well as streaming audio and video and an archive of unique digital resources. Our Special Collections houses the University Archives and a renowned Shakespeare and Renaissance collection dating to 1548. Our friendly librarians and staff put students first and work continuously to improve our services, our collections, and our engagement with the campus and the community.
Working collaboratively, the University Librarian develops and articulates the strategic mission of the library into concrete objectives for the students, faculty, University, and the local community. The University Librarian advances the implementation of innovative approaches to library management and services and demonstrates a deep commitment to diversity and intercultural goals of the institution. The University Librarian is responsible for overseeing all operations and services of Hannon Library. The University Librarian leads and inspires faculty and staff in implementing the Hannon Library's vision for the future; plans effective fiscal resource management; promotes library development initiatives; provides technological leadership for the library and the university; supports the development and implementation of an information literacy program for students; engenders a dynamic, student-centered service environment in a multi-campus setting; fosters the development of quality resources and services, encourages assessment activities at all levels; and works cooperatively with the library faculty and staff within a collegial system of shared governance. The University Librarian reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and is part of the senior academic leadership of the campus. Responsible for overall administration, planning, budget and implementation, assessment, and policy development for Hannon Library's collections, services, and facility. Directs a staff of seven librarians and 13 library technicians. An advocate and leader of the Hannon Library's mission, vision, and values. Permanent Co-chair of the annual Southern Oregon Arts and Research conference. The University Librarian works with SOU faculty and staff as well as the local community to promote SOAR and encourage participation and attendance. SOAR is a week-long on-campus showcase of student and faculty research, scholarship, performance, and artistic achievement. Responsible for the Tutoring areas consisting of the Writing Center, Math Center, and general tutoring services which are housed in the library. Actively seeks to engage the local and campus community through exhibits, displays, programs, performances, and other events. Serves as a member of the senior academic leadership team by actively participating in the Director's Council and the President's Executive Council, and other appropriate committees and councils. Represents Hannon Library on the Orbis Cascade Alliance Council of 38 academic libraries in the Northwest. Proactively seeks external support from donors, granting agencies and organizations, and state and federal sources.
Minimum Classification Qualifications:
ALA accredited master's degree.
Earned doctorate or second subject master's degree.
7 years of increasingly responsible and successful management experience in an academic library.
Experience with supportive organizations, such as a Friends of the Library.
Familiarity with academic accreditation processes.
Experience working collaboratively in a union environment with staff along with librarians that have full faculty status.
Demonstrated support for continuing education and professional development opportunities for all library employees.
All Listed Duties:
Maintain and oversee overall operations of the library, including anticipating and solving problems, overseeing activities of various areas in the library, coordination of services and allocation of resources. Work with a variety of campus groups including students, faculty, and staff to assure the library is providing the best service possible and planned outcomes are achieved. Engage the local community through exhibitions, lectures, performances, and events.
Supervise all librarians and the Executive Assistant to the University Librarian; all other staff and students indirectly. Develop a work environment that encourages creativity and innovation. Assure that assignments and workloads are equitable and that people are performing at a high level. Maintain good communication among librarians and staff; promote faculty and staff development; assure that the library observes all contractual obligations.
Working closely with the Executive Assistant to the University Librarian, oversee the budget including planning and allocation of resources, and ongoing review of budget activities.
Co-Chairing the Southern Oregon Arts and Research Conference including planning and promoting, meeting the academic departments and appropriate units across the campus, and supervising appropriate library staff and student assistants.
Liaise with groups outside of the library including the Friends of Hannon Library, the Orbis Cascade Alliance, other state and regional groups, and individuals within the region.
Participate in campus administration, management, and leadership activities, including the Director's Council and the President's Executive Council. Serve on appropriate campus committees.
Participate in regular librarian activities such as serving as the library liaison to one or more departments and programs, responsible for collections development, providing library instruction, and related duties.
Carry out necessary planning and strategic planning activities.
Professional growth and development activities. Service to the community.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
