Duties: Lead a laboratory project in the development and dissemination of high and ultrahigh vacuum measurements and standards. Perform calibrations of customer vacuum standards submitted through NIST Measurement Services and develop and deliver new calibration services as needed. Maintain and improve vacuum laboratories, instrumentation, and data acquisition and analysis systems and perform research to advance NIST vacuum measurement capabilities. Provide consultation and training in vacuum measurement and standards to NIST calibration customers, international visitors, and other stakeholders. Represent NIST within standards organizations that develop consensus technical documentary standards. Document calibration procedures and processes within a quality system and participate in and lead national and international measurement comparisons in vacuum measurement to ensure global acceptance of U.S. vacuum measurements and standards.
Physicist, ZP-1310-III Basic Requirements: A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
Chemist, ZP-1320-III Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in performing physical measurements in an environment which required the maintenance, modification, and development of high-vacuum instrumentation.
OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements OR A combination of education and experience.
