TITLE: CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, HARGRAVE MILITARY ACADEMY
Hargrave is seeking a dynamic, experienced and capable Chief Development Officer to lead our fund-raising efforts. Hargrave is a boarding and day school for boys grades seven through twelve and one post-graduate year. The campus is located on 200 acres in Chatham, VA, an hour from Greensboro, NC and 40 minutes from Lynchburg, VA. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) serves as part of the Senior Management Team. This position reports to the President and works closely with the Board of Trustees. The CDO will plan, coordinate and implement strategies to cultivate donors and grow contributions to support the Academy. The CDO will help to foster a culture of philanthropy within the Academy and lead staff and volunteers in fundraising efforts. The CDO will be responsible for donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition.
Work with the President to develop effective fund-raising strategies.
Provide engaged support for Board of Trustee members in their fund-raising efforts.
Develop and lead effective and consistent messaging.
Develop annual revenue goals and plans to diversify and increase organizational fundraising through a comprehensive development strategy.
Develop and implement short and long-term development strategies to increase individual giving levels.
Foster culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the Academy’s values, vision, and mission.
Establish balanced mix of donor sources and fundraising programs, tailored to the specific needs of the Academy, to attract and retain donors and fundraising volunteers.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with major donors.
Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate efficacy of fund development system.
Maintain accountability and ensure compliance with all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals.
Help to recruit, train, and empower team members of the development department.
Oversee development activities of support staff including database management, special events, communications, and gift acknowledgement.
Prepare reports and presentations for the President, Board Members and potential donors
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated successful experience in management and implementation of a successful, comprehensive fund development program.
Seven to ten years of senior level development experience preferred.
Extensive experience in identification and cultivation of donors.
Experience working with Boards and managing a staff team.
Experience using database management capabilities (Raiser’s Edge, Senior System, Wealth Engine and the like).
Strong research, analytical, organizational and written/verbal interpersonal skills.
Ability to motivate others around a common goal or mission.
Some evening or weekend work required; limited travel may be required.
Minimum of bachelor’s degree required.
