Francis W. Parker School is a renowned JK-12th grade independent day school. We are currently seeking a dynamic educational leader to be our next Upper School Dean of Student Life. The Dean reports to the Head of Upper School and is charged with ensuring a safe and supportive environment in which every student is known and encouraged to actively participate in the academic and extracurricular life of the School. The mission of the Dean’s Office is to foster a culture of mutual respect and citizenship, as well as individual and community responsibility that will enhance each student’s personal growth and academic success, and prepare them to be contributing members of society.
In addition to other administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School, the Dean will take an active leadership role in all aspects of student life. Essential duties include:
Support Inclusive and Collaborative Culture
Collaborative Working Relationships
Design, coordinate and implement ongoing support for Upper School students by working closely with students, the Upper School Head and all administrators, faculty, advisors, grade heads, College Counseling Office, Upper School counselors, the Athletic Department, the Learning Resources Department, the Admissions and Financial Aid Office, the Middle School Dean of Student Life, and the Alumni Office
Serve as a member of various faculty and staff committees, as appointed by the Head of Upper School, to represent Upper School administration
Assist in the supervision of faculty grade heads
Student Life Oversight and Supervision
Lead and coordinate the advisory program
Monitor grade-level meetings and activities; assist in the coordination of the student orientation program; attend all grade-level retreats; coordinate and monitor all student travel, both curricular and extracurricular
Coordinate and maintain oversight over clubs and affinity groups; work closely with student committee and club leaders to foster a positive, supportive, and varied extracurricular experience for Upper School students
Co-advise Student Government; attend and supervise athletic events and all major student events such as school dances, prom, performing arts productions, etc.; lead or assist other designated leaders with the coordination of any division-wide student events or activities; support the Civic Engagement program
Maintain current files, in-school posting board, and online resources site of student enrichment opportunities (e.g., internships, summer programs, study abroad programs, job postings, etc.) and meet regularly with students, parents, and advisors in order to apprise them of these offerings
Oversee and manage a budget for the Dean of Student Life in coordination with the Business and Upper School offices
Oversee Student Comportment and Discipline
In coordination with the Head of Upper School, support students by promoting and maintaining expectations for student behavior and comportment, including coordinating the implementation and documentation of educative, restorative counseling, and discipline policies.
Oversee Student Attendance
Provide guidance to the attendance coordinator regarding the timely and accurate monitoring and communication of student attendance and truancy records to the Upper School Head, advisors, teachers and parents
Prerequisites & Background Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required
Masters in a related field of study preferred (i.e. Adolescent Education)
Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a high school
Preference for candidates with significant administrative experience
Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills, and spoken and written communication
Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail
Demonstrated success in working with students and colleagues collaboratively, flexibly, with empathy, humor and good judgment
Proficiency with technology, particularly MS Office and Google Apps
Demonstrated cultural competency awareness
