Cranwell International Center at Virginia Tech seeks a seasoned leader with exceptional change management skills who will lead a newly re-designed International Student Services team, providing immigration services for a growing international student population of approximately 4,000 at Virginia Tech.
The Associate Director for International Student Services (Immigration Services) reports to the Director of Cranwell International Center (CIC) and is responsible for providing senior-level strategic leadership for International Student Services within CIC, including serving as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO), for the university’s ~4,000 international undergraduate and graduate students.
GENERAL ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION (75%)
- Responsible for senior-level strategic leadership, including day-to-day operational level oversight, management, and supervision, for the International Student Services functional unit within Cranwell International Center (CIC) - Supervise a team of six, including two direct reports: Assistant Director for International Student Advising; Assistant Director for Immigration Compliance and Data Management - Provide strategic direction and leadership regarding institutional compliance with complex federal regulations governing the enrollment of international students and the delivery of related services to international students - Function as Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), authorized/certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - Oversee and lead the bi-annual recertification of the university’s F-1 Program with the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) - Develop, review, and/or approve all CIC policies and procedures related to the delivery of international student services (immigration services) - Provide oversight for the ongoing utilization and maintenance of the Sunapsis enterprise software system for compliance and the delivery of immigration services - Provide leadership and oversight for the collection, organization, analysis, and visualization of data related to International Student Services (e.g., quantitative metrics related to appointments, walk-in, casework, etc,; and qualitative data related to the international student experience), including data for the annual IIE Open Doors Report - Develop and maintain appropriate relationships and partnerships with a wide range of academic colleges/schools/departments - Develop and maintain appropriate relationships and partnerships with a wide range of administrative departments/offices, including but not limited to Bursar’s Office, Registrar’s Office, Student Health Insurance, VT Police, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, Athletics, etc. - Work closely with the Director, and collaboratively with other Associate Directors within CIC, to ensure effective and efficient alignment, integration, and coordination between all functional units, and to otherwise provide senior-level strategic leadership for CIC as a whole, including but not limited to the following: Research, propose, document, and implement office-wide policies and procedures; Assist the Director with the development and implementation of strategic plans; Assist the Director with the development and implementation of assessment plan(s); Assist the Director with the development and implementation of CIC budget(s); Assist the Director with special projects and other initiatives within CIC; Represent CIC on various university committees, as assigned; Represent the Director and act in full capacity as the Director at the Director’s request
IMMIGRATION CASEWORK (25%) - Maintain an immigration caseload - Maintain appointments - Assist with walk-ins (as needed)
- Master’s degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education administration, public administration, public policy, business administration, law, or related field - Minimum of 8 years progressive experience in a leadership role in an international office in a university setting, including serving as PDSO/DSO and/or RO/ARO - Demonstrated expertise in federal regulations and compliance related to international students - Demonstrated ability to read, understand and interpret complex regulations of numerous federal agencies, and apply those regulations to specific academic and employment situations and contexts - Demonstrated experience in the design, development, implementation, and assessment of international student support programs and services, including but not limited to orientation and/or transition program(s) - Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as highly developed presentation skills - Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, train, and mentor staff - Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize own and others workload effectively, and to delegate work - Demonstrated experience developing and delivering presentation(s) and trainings to international students and/or other university faculty and staff - Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion - Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, both oral and written, interpersonal, and intercultural - Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively - Must be US Citizen or US Lawful Permanent Resident
- 10+ years progressive experience in a leadership role in an international office in a university setting, including serving as PDSO/DSO and/or RO/ARO - Experience with Sunapsis - Experience with Banner - Fluency in a foreign language - Experience living and/or studying abroad
